Methodology

Our shortlist blends three types of signals: official crime and governance context, international travel advisories, and traveler reviews on MapSur.

We also weigh welcoming and inclusivity, because traveler safety is not only about violent crime. Some indicators are city-level, others are national, and coverage is not perfectly uniform across Asia.

Scores are on a 5-point scale, where 4.5+ signals very strong overall comfort, 4.0 to 4.4 signals strong with normal city caveats, and 3.0 to 3.9 signals workable but with meaningful caveats for specific traveler profiles.

MapSur read: treat this list as a starting point. Profile-based reviews on the destination pages are where the picture becomes much more useful.

The shortlist

Each entry sits on a 5-point editorial scale that blends crime context, advisories and traveler feedback.

Singapore

Consistently ranks among the safest cities globally. Very low violent crime, dense public transport, predictable rules. Worth noting that some laws are stricter than travelers expect, especially around drugs and public conduct.

#1 Score 4.7

Tokyo, Japan

Famous for safety even at night, with very low crime and excellent infrastructure. Some identity-based traveler experiences can vary; reviews on MapSur add useful nuance for Black, LGBT and solo women profiles.

#2 Score 4.6

Seoul, South Korea

Physically very safe with strong public transport. Social comfort can vary by district and nightlife area, with mixed feedback for some identity-based traveler profiles.

#3 Score 4.4

Taipei, Taiwan

Low crime and one of the most LGBT-friendly capitals in Asia (same-sex marriage legal since 2019). Welcoming overall, with good infrastructure and easy navigation.

#4 Score 4.3

Osaka, Japan

Shares Japan's very strong safety baseline with a more casual atmosphere than Tokyo. Easy to navigate, friendly to first-time visitors.

#5 Score 4.3

Hong Kong

Low violent crime and dense, efficient transport. Political and demonstration context has shifted since 2020, so check current advisories before booking.

#6 Score 4.2

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Generally safe with strong halal infrastructure for Muslim travelers. Conservative social norms in some areas, especially around dress and LGBT visibility.

#7 Score 3.8

Bangkok, Thailand

Workable for many travelers. Same-sex marriage is legal since 2025, which improves the LGBT picture. Petty scams and uneven nightlife areas remain practical caveats.

#8 Score 3.6

Ubud, Bali (Indonesia)

Calmer than the southern beach areas, generally welcoming. Transport scams and motorbike risk are the main practical caveats; conservative Muslim norms apply across most of Indonesia.

#9 Score 3.5

Hanoi, Vietnam

Physically safe with low violent crime. Traffic chaos and petty scams are the main daily friction; LGBT travel is workable but socially discreet.

#10 Score 3.5

The bottom line

Asia concentrates some of the world's strongest traveler-safety signals, especially in East Asian capitals. Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul and Taipei lead this 2026 shortlist on overall comfort. Osaka and Hong Kong remain strong with normal city caveats. Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Ubud and Hanoi are workable for many travelers but require more profile-aware planning.

Whatever your shortlist looks like, the real decision-making layer is profile-based: who is reporting from there, with what experience, in which neighborhood. That is exactly what MapSur is built to surface.
